Here some observations and I'm wondering you guys have the same:
* Even I get these strange layouts with "??" I can still switch the keyboard

I have a multimonitor configuration with nVidia Quadro140 (Dell Latitude D830)
and have solved the problem setting the same vertical resolution for the
monitor, using TwinView option.
This is just a workaround, I had to force the notebook panel to work @1024

This was with Ubuntu 8.04 and its stock -server kernel
(2.6.24-19-server). As far as we remember, there wasn't anything
syslogged. The problem appeared to present as the machines ceasing to
service interrupts. Network activity ground to a halt, Ethernet and FC

ok... all this workarounds and install I've seen so far tells me that I
would have to rebuilt the driver from source... which avoiding that is
the reason I am using ubuntu (I used to have fedora)... I love when plug

what surprises me, is that my webcam (genius eye 110) works

I followed the steps in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed and ran
# apt-get install -t intrepid-proposed linux
# shutdown -r now new kernel

You only saw the header of the rom binary. It's binary code so you can't read
it in a text editor. The header just happened to have ASCII text though. Not
sure what the maintainer will do with it but, they are asking for it for debug
purposes.

Some lines in Ubuntu's 2.6.27-7 kernel (8.10) exceed the 128 character
limit hardcoded in kerneltop.c, giving the "wrong map line" error
message on the next line number as seen below. Increasing S_LEN to 144
seems to fix it.
