Tested from both Nautilus and Rhythmbox. The results are the same. The
title of the error message is slightly different, but the error message

I have been unable to reproduce this error in Intrepid (fresh install,
not an upgrade from my Hardy install). If no one else can confirm that
this problem exists in Intrepid, I'm going to close the problem as fix

may have unpredictable results. However, I've been able to pull the
rabbit out of the hat, at least for an earlier incantation of
oem-config.
Here's what I did:
1. Reboot the machine.
2. At the GRUB menu, select the recovery mo

terminal, where sudo reads the password from.
Cursor keys (and others) work just fine in passwords, so breaking those
(which are actually really good password characters!) for the sake of
"aesthetics" is not warranted at all.

FINAL UPDATE-
I think I found the problem- I did a third install, fresh from the live
CD like the other 2, but THIS TIME- knowing there were over 100 updates,
INSTEAD OF immediately opening Firefox, I waited like 5 minutes for the
updates- Updating before using Firefox allows it to complete normal

This sounds very similar to bug 32906, but this was fixed in hardy
(8.04).
I cannot reproduce this at all, if I remove "localhost" and my hostname
from /etc/hosts, both sudo and gksu still work fine.
To debug this on your side: do you also get the hang if you run "sudo"
in a root terminal? I. e.

to set a bug to "Triaged", "Wishlist" or "Fix Commited"? And does one set it to
