can be controlled by from the commandline. Question really is: do we need an

I have the same problem. I have use nfs to for my home and ldap to
login. So I need networking before I login. If my laptop is wired it is
no problem. But with wifi (wpa) and using networkmanager, I first have
to login before wifi (wpa) can be enabled so I choose to configure wifi

I have observed a problem with USB which is probably due to the same cause.
USB works o.k. with the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel, but I have problems with the
2.6.24-21-generic kernel.
I am using the 8.04 version of Kubuntu.
The problems I have observed are related to the use of a USB hub.

I think it is more a acpi problem than a problem of gnome:
Your problem is that your keyboard shortcuts do not work anymore, isn't it?
If yes, we need three things:
1. What the key *should* do.
2. What keycode (magic number) the key produces on your laptop.
3. How to identify your laptop
I'm having the same error on the same model laptop.

I can confirm this bug on a IBM Thinkpad X30. Upgrading from 8.04 to
8.10 results in the above mentioned symptoms.
Removing compiz makes it possible to bring up the desktop. By the look
of things, compiz does not play nicely with the Intel 82830
GPU/chipset...

I think there's something else going on, too. I can't get persistence
to work either, and I've built an initrd with the latest casper in it,
but it still doesn't work. It never finds the casper-rw or home-rw
devices. Having set -x in the casper script to get some debugging info,
