I should also have mentioned that the kind gentleman at the store where I purchased the motherboard tried out a PCI-Express video card of the nvidia flavor which should have worked, but did not... it behaved exactly the same as the onboard graphics. Hence my assertion that the problem is with the motherboard support rather than the Chrome9 HC IGP. I'm largely computer illiterate, however, so take all of this with a hefty grain of salt.
Secondly, I was a bit concerned when I tried the Beta version of Intrepid just to see if anything had been worked out. It's actually much, much worse now. Before I had to peer through static-like video noise to make out what my mouse pointer was doing on-screen. Now there is a small, non-interactive smudge in the middle of a completely black screen once the LiveCD installer gets going. My assumption is that I can still safely upgrade to 8.10, but a fresh install (the method recommended quite heavily in the forums) seems unlikely.
