If I do a Ctrl-Alt-F1 just after the login screen, the command line displays
O.K.
I then listen for boot to complete. When activity stops, I do a
Ctrl-Alt-F7 then the Gnome desktop displays, background, top & bottom lines,
the whole bit. For about a second. Then everything goes black again.

I tried both the "Clearlooks" and "Crux" themes, and I was able to
reproduce this problem in both cases.
Without compiz, I have still been able to get a delay to occur, but it
is not as pronounced it is with compiz enabled. (I think this has to do
with the fact that compiz is performing a fade-in

Ok, I've attached a branch for a new release of landscape-client
1.0.21.2. The tarball has been uploaded to launchpad, and this branch
contains the changes to source and to debian/changelog. The only change
to source from the previous version is the one from the other branch in
this ticket.

that Rhythmbox freezes. Good call in deducing *where* the problem is,
