doesn't change: the cpu freq scaling governor.
So I was trying this out on the command line:
sudo echo powersave > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
but I get a "permission denied" error (using sudo wtf)...
Interestingly, kede's Windows XP uses AGP x4 (and even FastWrites
enabled). One might start to suspect there is a bug in Xorg AGP
handling, even though upstream so far says it's a hardware setting
incompatibility (card vs bridge).

This is a strange bug. I just installed OOo 2.4.1 from
www.openoffice.org on Debian Etch 4.0r4 and it works.
But if I install OOo 2.4.1 from www.openoffice.org on Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha

I tried the Intrepid Alpha 6 and got the same result. The X server hangs
shortly after blanking the screen and putting up the initial mouse
cursor.
I'm currently running the VIA proprietary drivers on Ubuntu Hardy. That,
plus the original VESA X.org drivers worked OK
Are we going to backport some form of this apt, so that upgrades from
hardy, with an intrepid alternate CD, will work?

I have the same problem. I use libnodave for the serial communication
with my SPS (on old Server with Ubunutu 7.04 the programm works).
Now, on my new Server with Ubunutu 8.04.1 it do'nt work. When the SPS

for me hal changes the CPU freq scaling governor too.
However, you cannot edit the file
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor until you are in a root
environment (sudo will not work). So, to edit the file, just type:
sudo -i
echo "powersave" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/c

I think the problem is with the "ati" device driver. If I manually edit
Xorg.conf to use the "vesa" driver isntead, I get to a login screen and
after that a working desktop. But if I change it back to the driver
"ati" the aforementioned symptom appears again.
Also, I can see that my Xorg.conf file
I just installed the current intrepid-desktop-i386 on my Asus Eee 900.
To enable wireless, I had to comment "blacklist ath5k" and uncomment
"blacklist ath_pci" in /etc/modprobe.d/madwifi and reboot.
So far, I couldn't notice any wireless slowdowns compared to other
operating systems.

In general there's no way to know that Emacs will be running for a
particular user, and if one has to start it up, the delay is not
avoided. It's nice to use emacsclient if a server happens to be running,
but if it's not, then it's also nice if ALTERNATE_EDITOR is set to
something that starts up fa
By the way, the proof that there is demand for this functionality is the
popularity of Zile (of which I am the upstream maintainer). Zile does
have a niche on resource-constrained systems, but I would like to be
able to do away with it for most uses; however, for quick startup it
still beats Emacs
is the kernel module 'dm-mod' loaded? does the problem go away if you
'sudo modprobe dm-mod'?

cd /etc/X11
open your xorg.conf by vi or nano,
goto device section,
change driver from "fglrx" to "ati" or whatever you have...
you may also add disable "dri" to modules section
try startx,
if your xwindow starts, its ok.
restart your system.
