I've been experiencing this problem with my HP laptop (model no:

I don't know what is fixed in the kernel but it was a problem for me in 2.6.24
and 2.6.25 (on Sidux). No instability at all under kernel 2.6.27, and I haven't
changed xserver-xorg-video-intel, so I don't think that was responsible in my

I've noticed, that / partition is too small on majority of disks these days -
I've did some tests with small (8 GB) and large (250 GB) drives, used "separate
home" partitioning scheme:
- with 8 GB drive installed created about 2,5 GB / partition, which is too
small these days for desktop systems
Everything is working fine for me now. No more scrambled screen. (this bug) No
more multiple loading bars and unaccessible virtual terminals. (bug #245849 &
bug #253243).
And direct rendering is still there.
I haven't tried out different AGP settings yet. AGP mode 4 works well for me.

I've found that there are config.status.lineno and configure.lineno in
the debdiff, which should probably get removed in the "clean" target
(but I'm not sure).
Also, it would be nice to fix (at least some of) the following lintian warnings:

It looks like you're trying to run too many agents. ssh-agent functionality is
provided by gnome-keyring but isn't chained into the session start up sequence
ala seahorse-agent

No apologies needed; I'm happy to see this moving forward. I've
switched almost all of my servers to your version. I haven't noticed
any regressions. In fact, all I've noticed is that the 2 major problems
