I switched the rendering method to something else (x11? i'm not at that
system atm) which fixed it, and also play using xine now.
Using mplayer now simply kills the video player when i try to use in full
screen.
I'm running the latest release.

Earlier today I received both the Nvidia update from 177.68 to 177.70
and the kernel update from 2.6.26-5 to 2.6.27-2. Upon restarting the
system I found that the Nvidia driver 177.70 had been built for kernel
2.6.26-5 not 2.6.27-2. Reinstalling nvidia-graphics-drivers-177 solved
the problem.

Oh bugger. I tried emailing John Coffman, the author of LILO, to get his
take on this (the previous comment), but the mail bounced.
It pretty much sums up my _suspicions_:
LILO has a heuristic to determine when the "large-memory" option is needed, but
it underestimates, leading to this edge case.
Added to the 4.1.1 packaging - should be available sometime next week.

Take a look at the bug data of duplicate bug 262981, which is a similar
crash. There a message was selected and delete button was pressed.
Only thing I noticed in both cases is that the internet connection was
unstable and slow at the time, but that shouldn't have made evolution
crash.
