Problem solved.
First checked /boot and had 68Mb free, thought this will be enough.
Apparently not.
After removing some older kernels, now everything works fine again.
Found some hints about this in related Bugreports.
I was a bit too fast in reporting this.

UPDATE (with 2.6.24-20.38) :
- Unable to surf on WPA/PSK Network -> `iwlist wlan0 scan` doesn't see
the network.

- `modprobe -r iwl3945` go to kernel panic.

About a week ago I inserted the Extensions section and not disabled DRI.
Since then ubuntu 8.04.1 has worked well. No black screens or freezes. Still
get the occasional screen flash but this is rare now. Maybe once an hour, was

The driver loads fine on mine. It seems to have solved the problem of
the system hanging during normal internet use however I still have the
issue where the system hangs after pressing the shutdown button on the

I agree that pushing out real fixes upstream is generally the better

Chuck,
Just tried to post a problem I got into following your instruction. PC I
was using disconnected from internet after I applied patch & tried
compile of ssb.ko. So not able to accurately remember events as I'm now
using another PC.
Patch command said that changes to hunks 1,3,4 had already b

I take it from the brainstorm idea [1] that this regards Xubuntu - is
that correct? If so, you mean "Manage Print Jobs" instead of "Manage
Printer Settings". And since print jobs aren't settings, they shouldn't
be in the settings menu. Since they do not concern administrative tasks
