I have been able to narrow down what is causing this issue on my system.
The pam_namespace.so module causes a segfault when a non-existent user
is listed in /etc/security/namespace.conf file. I haven't looked at the
source, but I'm guessing it has something to do with a user database

I've just had this crash on Hardy. I'm using Kubuntu 64 bit on an AMD64
+3800 with nVidia Geoforce 7600GS video card. I went to System Settings
- Appearance - Windows Decorations and selected the buttons tab. On

I started testing Ubuntu Hardy with the 1st beta, so its hard to know
when first it worked (as far as I remember though, hardy beta did not
work until the day before release on my laptops).
So I am quite convinced it worked with 8.04 release.
