I have the same issue also. The only way I've found to 'recover' is to
hold in the power button so as to restart the machine. Ubuntu 7.10, AMD
64 x 2, Radeon 9250 graphics card, 2 gigs RAM, AMD chipset.

I had the same problem after I installed Hardy via debootstrap.
I solved the problem by reinstalling the policy package and purging the
old config:

just a bug that appeared out of the blue and then apport submitted it.
For this reason, I will not reopen this bug.
Anyway, I'm fairly sure it was related to a conflict between totem and
some other app with respect to pulseaudio.
I too find this annoying, some people might find it useful however so
making it optional would be my suggestion.

I also had this problem, and resolving it was easy {in the end}
The x server uses the first screen resolution in the xorg.conf file for login
So make the first entry the one you want.
The biggest problem with hardy is that the flexible x configuration tools have
been dumbed down; e.g. displayconf
Thomas, not every instance of UUIDs not being recognized -- at least in
the way we're discussing here -- is a bug. Sometimes, it is difficult or
impossible to recognize them. Sometimes, it makes no sense to recognize
them anyway.
Look at the examples which the script already deliberately ignores.

I can confirm this issue as present in up-to-date Hardy. The workaround
given solves the problem (at least for local files).
