That is correct, xserver-xgl uses the Mesa OpenGL drivers, and doesn't use
your nvidia drivers. Again, this seems to point in the direction that
NVidia's drivers are at fault for this problem.

I tried to install the most recent Version of XUbuntu ( 8.04) – like Stephen on
an old IBM Think Pad, and I experienced the same problem he had with version
5.10.
After choosing "manual" in the partition menue the installation stops at 40%.
The logfile partman shows the correct partitioning

By the way you'd better report the bug/feature request upstream (with
firefox) than with ubuntu. So I would suggest you close this bug

It may have been corrupted preferences or something. I changed the
preferences for firefox downloads to something else and saved and then
changed the preferences back again and it started working again.

doesn't give me all the choices of screen resultion I'd like.
In answer to your second question, no, the Hardy live CD does not work.
It hangs.
