I installed the BETA driver after uninstalling everything related to

Oh, on, the artifacts of the last post were my fault. I had tried to
temporarily disable the shadows, but put the x- and y- offset sliders
fully negative instead of zero. The pink artifacts appearing above and
to the left of windows were in fact shadows.

I've the Intel 965 adapter as well. I've just dist-upgraded to Hardy
(stable). I can confirm the behaviour dnquark describes. On gutsy you
had to have DRI disabled in order to be able to rotate the screen. On
hardy, you can enable DRI - but still require compiz to be disabled.

setup with ATI Radeon Mobility X700 was working with Gutsy normaly, but

Hi all,
I have got the same problem, but I am doing the upgrade via Alternate
CD. (If I should post this elsewhere please let me know)
I now have update manager saying that I have 475 updates and do a
partial upgrade.

Thanks for your reply. would it be OK to address another issue with you
regarding the linux-restricted modules. I have been unable to get an answer
as to why the Nvidia restricted modules are packaged together with Atheros
