I would like to point out that this doesn't happen when I tell it to
index only my home folder. My hunch is that its getting stuck on
permission problems as it tries to open up and read the files owned by
root throughout the drive. Is there ignore error code in the code
somewhere?.

Not sure about why you wouldn't be able to login, but if it's something
that's been fixed in an upgrade you can hit ctl-alt-F1 to go into a
"VTTY". From there you should be able to login, and type
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
to get any package upgrades that might fix your prob

Tiziano, please try purging the current package, before fiddling in
/var/lib/dpkg/status directly. You only seem to have tried to reinstall it:

After a few more tests, I am now unable to get any sound out of the
speakers or the headphones. The modem now works (with sl-modem-daemon
configured to use alsa hw:0,6), but the only sound I can get is noise if

I have the same problem. I type in a sudo command and am asked for my password
followed by a blinking black square (curser). When I try to type in my password
