I finally got Gutsy stable... I think Hardy can wait a while. I did
install the 169.09 nvidia drivers in Gutsy though and no change. Laptop
LCD shows random noise during logout and shutdown as well as in a
virtual console while an externally attached LCD is fine.

Yep, alsa version 1.0.16 is a definite improvement over 1.0.15, though

Actually, I wouldn' t say this is fixed for sure as I haven't tested
this enough yet but after updating today to alsa 0.16rc in Hardy, at
least I get an internet mic switch in the sound applet (see screenshot).

Hi all, I found a problem with xenified kernel source in
arch/i386/mm/hypervisor.c and arch/x86_64/kernel/smp-xen.c :
xen_l1_entry_update and flush_tlb_page are not exported to kernel symbol table.

I installed linux-backports-modules and rebooted. The sound volume was
now at 100% and I was unable to decrease it nor change sound device from
Preferences->Sound or the Sound Volume applet. I was however able to
decrease it to 97% through the volume keys on the PC. Sound recorder

It would definitely be nice to fix this for hardy.
I would however suggest another solution: change the dialog box so that
it warns the user about the improper shut down:

amd64 version if your kernel is amd64.
IOW, it does the 'right thing'. I would probably do a reboot
afterwards, just to be sure, but its not required.

Of course, add your own language/country code. Reboot so the change can
