Kenneth,

I installed linux-backports-modules and rebooted. The sound volume was
now at 100% and I was unable to decrease it nor change sound device from
Preferences->Sound or the Sound Volume applet. I was however able to
decrease it to 97% through the volume keys on the PC. Sound recorder
would not open and complained something along these lines: "The sound
recording settings are not correct. Please correct these in Multimedia
and retry"

I removed linux-backports-modules and I'm now back to my old volume
settings as well as being able to change the volume. The mic is of
course still not working.

Should I try enabling gutsy-proposed and try with the packages in that
repo? Is there any chance it will help?
