Followup to the last entry: I just switched to the text-console using
ctrl-alt-F1 after booting and tried closing and opening the lid multiple
times. I got the system to freeze after a few tries (opening and closing

I just installed Kubuntu Gutsy from the i386 Desktop install CD (the
image was verified, so that isn't a problem).

AMD64). If you search for the option in KControl it says that a match is
found, however as stated above, you cannot click any of the icons. I

I've experienced this bug. It causes ciso archives created on AMD64 to
fail on the PSP, or with other Ciso tools, because it changes the
archive header size. Note that this patch will probably break the source

To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm reproducing the same error, but every time I
turn on Rhythmbox it crashes. I'm pretty sure it's since I asked it to "watch

There's a temporary workaround you can use:
(1) Install a GTK theme like QtCurve. A default Kubuntu install will
only have Raleigh (unpleasing) and QtGTK (doesn't work).
(2) Run gtk-chtheme (in Universe) and select the new theme.

I'm don't know who attached this bug to Ubuntu. It was only introduced
recently (Dec 2007) and certainly doesn't occur in 0.45.1. I'm setting
the status to "Fix Committed" but maybe even "Fix Released" is
appropriate. Feel free to change it again.

I am seeing this a great deal, I am also using the nvidia restricted
drivers, and have an AMD Turion ml-30 CPU with 3Gb of RAM. The card is a
Geforce 6600 with 256 Mb.

Some newer drives are very quiet about the clicking.
I would suggest inquiring on sourceforge, in hdparm's forums. The bug
of not being able to change APM levels is different. You may even want
to file a bug (or check to see if a bug already exists) with the hdparm
package.

I thought it might be desktop effects, but since I had already turned

wodim still does not work on Gutsy. It is not suid root, and by defaults, does
not have access to CD drive.
cdrecord found in gutsy's multiverse is set suid root and works correctly. To
make wodim work, one has to (permissions get reset after reboot because of
using udev/hal) chgrp cdrom /dev/sc
