I too can confirm this bug and the workaround. On my machine, I had to
try to upgrade to the hardy version and downgrade, but a couple of
ubuntu-uk users who were having the same problem report that a
straightforward sudo apt-get install hal -reinstall did the trick for
them.

(available at http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/metapackages/linux-image-

Otherwise: workaround from platypuss72 worked with linux 2.6.22 but the

Same here on a Dell inspiron 530 DT
Yesterday I’ll be able to do the install with the alternate cd (normal install

It looks like Hardy Alpha 2 finally solves this problem for me. To my
great pity, I have no time for proper testing (unless I install Hardy as
my working system, which I'm yet afraid of doing), but my usual ways to

I tried to change theme in gtk-qt config page in system-settings, doesn't work.
I even installed gnome-control-center, and tried to change theme there.
Funny though the applet that changes the theme, does change its appearance,
but other applications' look doesn't change.

When I go to full screen mode (only recently, it worked a while ago!)
then a window with empty title appears in taskbar, and taskbar is visible on
top of window.
If I click on the taskbar entry, then taskbar hides, and all works
correct

I confirm
some fonts, including Bitstream have trouble with some polish characters like
ó (it should be o with `)
others have trouble with ż (z with a dot on top).
There are like 12 glyphs to do, how they could not get it right?!

I have a Gutsy server, new clean install which never switches the screen
