Please disregard the previous comment. The updated flash-plugin only
reduces the frequency of the crashes (to ~1/70). A step forward, but
still a critical bug (see my comments on bug #98688).

I doubt it's that. First of all, there are several error messages before
starting Xgl.
Second of all, after another reboot I could log-in normally. Xgl
actually started, but it was much too slow, so I just uninstalled it.
Now I can log-in, but I have other issues with compiz (other bug).

I can get you to where I am, which is farther than you are, but still
short of the goal:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install devscripts
sudo apt-get install dh-buildinfo
Then, retry sudo dpkg-buildpackage -b -d, and you'll have the same error

Feel free to revert back to using the Gutsy (or Feisty) kernel if you
like as it appears the Hardy kernel didn't seem to provide any further

I have an Acer 9301 Wmsi which exhibted this exact problem. however I
have also found an exact solution to which makes perfect sense to me.
