I've got two identical desktop pcs with an ATI Radeon X300.

Can you please attach your menu.lst?
So if I understand correctly, you added the initrd line manually in the
grub menu before booting the kernel? And just running update-grub
afterwards solved the issue?
That forum thread has many other issues mixed in, it seems. I am not
sure your issue has anyt

I'm running gutsy on a laptop, which is not always connected to a
network, but as it is most of the time, i've activated the yahoo search
plugin (see attached settings dialog). As long as I have a network
connection, this works fine, with the network cable pulled, it crashes.
Steps to reproduce:
