After trying out the ubuntu9 patch, I think it mostly solved the problem
for me. But I do notice one thing (and I'm not sure it's a critical
thing, just a little disconcerting). When opening a new window in
Firefox, the image of whatever page you were on becomes "scrambled" for
about a half secon
good idea... will try that when i have time. I did try a script I
found in a forum thread that was supposed to allow compiz to run.
Don't know if video worked before that or not, but compiz still
doesn't work. It's possible the script messed up some settings.

I just tried both of them as well. The first one (0ubuntu8~bwh1) causes
a lockup before the computer has entered sleep mode. It looks as if the
crash is caused by the VT switching but I'm not sure.

nah, you're right, It's probably unrelated. I already have Peter's one
installed, and it fixed the grey blocks issue for me. This issue is
probably something else. I'll post a bug.

After deleting the xorg.conf file and all the backups -- and the
xorg.conf.failsafe ones to try to force it to a useable state, leaving
only the hand-edited xorg.conf it smears X completely. Evidently
whatever changes have been made ignore the 'Virtual' keyword and attempt

I have the feeling that the problem has to do with "envy". When I remove
it all available kernels give a monitor crash. If I then try to
reinstall "envy" I get the message that the operating system (now 7.10)

It happens for me too, on the Gutsy with the latest updates. However, it
seems that it is ntfs-3g who is eating CPU time, because the same
operation works in about 10 seconds on the ext3 disk, while it took
about 3 minutes on a NTFS one.

I can confirm this bug on my Thinkpad T60.
This is really annoying because the brightness used when I'm on
batteries is too low and I can hardly see anything. If I manually
increase the brightness, it goes back automatically to the low value
after more or less 2 minutes.

I've uninstalled all plugins and language packs.
There is nothing in /var/crash and I've had no luck in modifying the

A colleague of mine (Peter Miller) went to the trouble of debugging this
further.
He found that by adding:
