The original poster seems to have used gdebi-kde, too ("Binary package
hint: gdebi-kde"). The same for me: I've also used gdebi-kde, not gdebi
as you've thought.
To change the debconf frontend, you have to run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure
debconf" from a console. This should let you change the frontend

it detects a TV output, and configures it with 1024x768, even if there is no TV
out on the machine at all.

Why does it need to be reinstalled?
There's no Ubuntu repository for "virtualbox", just the official one,
but unsupported by Ubuntu: see http://virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
(where you can find .debs and the instructions to add the virtualbox.org
archive to your APT sources).

using an nvidia-glx after first having nvidia-glx-new installed. Had to
manually insmodding the correct nvidia.ko and then start gdm, bit of a
