I have now installed an IDE drive in addition to the SATA drive that
already exists in this machine. My suspicion was that the server version
was having problems with the SATA drive, however it still won't boot
from the IDE drive either.
The startup parameters in grub appear to be correct for both
kpilot crashes on gutsy. I start it up for the first time and use the
wizard, click "automatically detect handheld and user name", then hit
the synchronize button. It seems to extract the user, then crashes with
an error in the threading library. (There's no other useful information
in the trace.)
Workaround as per forums:

When the iPhone is initially plugged in it will enter charging mode, but
quickly return to its default state which is its normal operation while
unplugged. seems to be a misconfiguration as it works when initialy
plugged in.

1) can you do 'dmesg' command on console and attach (not paste) the
output here. Also look through the output for keywords like 'wifi' and
see if the wireless card is recognized
