Thank you very much for that informative reply -- that clarifies the
Ubuntu uname situation immensely. I do wonder why RHEL/CentOS (and
possibly other distros) behave differently, but this isn't an
appropriate discussion venue for that. I would question why Ubuntu
doesn't follow suit, bu

should be caused by banshee.

After 4 hours of laborious search I finally found why the hfsplus
partition was mounted read-only. Due to the bug we discuss here,
unmounting does create problems on the hfsplus partition which becomes
readable only on the next mount. Manual unmounting does not help either.
Under these conditions,
I have exactly the same problem with the same camera. Other cameras such
as Nikon D70 or another Canon camera I forgot the name work, so I
figured it was a misconfiguration of this specific one.
