Yes, it is the "splash" option that must be giving the blank screen.
When I remove the splash (and quiet) option I don't get the blank
screen. However all is still not well. While I don't get the blank
screen, I don't get a proper login prompt either. I can see the output

In Feisty you need to install the openprinting-ppds-extra package for
Savin PPDs, to save space on the desktop/alternate cd these are not
included by default (see below).
Dapper had the foomatic-filters-ppds package installed by default with static
PPDs (including Savin PPDs).

Just an addition to this, using en_IN with xmms or other GTK 1.2
applications has missing text (as in attached screenshot) which goes
away if LANG=C is used. Probably there's a larger problem than just
Evolution.

I'm not able to replicate the scenario since the configuration of the
machine where it was observed has since changed. I added 512MB of memory
to the machine and now the hibernate doesn't work. I have not yet filed
this issue.
