The problem is due to the following lines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
InputDevice"stylus" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice"cursor" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice"eraser" "SendCoreEvents"
Once I comment them out and restart the X server, I no longer see the X
errors.

If you wouldn't mind testing this to see if this issue has been fixed in
the newer release I would greatly appreciate it. If this doesn't work,
then just remove this one and reinstall the previous version from the
repositories. Thanks!

problem reappeared even after the deinstallation of pbuttonsd.
IIRC the reboot did not happen when i disconnected the keyboard from the
USB port before the machine was completly shut down.

Resolved issue by swapping out 3Com 3CR990 NIC (Typhoon Driver) for Intel e100.

What actually happens when you try and type the password, do you get
errors, blank lines? I'm thinking this might be a dupe of another bug
