I see the same problem on my T60 laptop. I periodically have to "sudo
modprobe -r e1000" followed by "sudo modprobe e1000" to get my eth0

Because you don't use Twinview you should be able to disable it without any
side effects (unless you one day do wish to use it). Could you try disabling
DynamicTwinView in xorg.conf and reporting back?

At the time I reported this bug, I was completely new to computers and
Ubuntu. The "switch user"-issue is no longer an issue for me. I lock screen
first an then switch users. And there is no problem. Sorry forgot about it -
