I finally found out how to reproduce and work around the problem: I have
a Pinnacle PCTV Pro card installed, which has an IR remote control.
Ubuntu therefore automatically loads the saa7134 module at startup. When
I blacklist that module, the problem disappears. So the problem is

I tried to install Ubuntu GNU/Linux on my brand new computer (not
laptop) and ran into a problem similar to the one described here: my
sata hdd was not detected.
I use a VIA VT6420 SATA RAID Controller with the RAID option disabled
in the BIOS (thus selecting SATA).

I don't recall what I was doing there... I have been unable to receive
email for the past four days. 'Could send, but not receive. Finally
found that my ISP had truncated my log-in name. (*(&*^#%!
I haven't changed it for 5-7 years and it sure didn't happen here.

Same problem with an adaptec 3100S raid controller. Is there any work
around for the problem? Right now my server is unusable with 6.06 LTS.
It just hangs at boot.

Firstly, please don't assign to MOTU. That takes it off the unassigned
