FWIW, I have an Epson Stylus C88 and printing is also very slow. It's
connected via lpr. Printing from my Mac or Windows machines is very
quick. Interestingly, the Mac is using Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2, which
seems to be the same driver as I'm using here in Linux. I've attached my

GDM uses PAM for authentication, and PAM will allow users with blank
passwords to authenticate in certain situations if nullok_secure in
/etc/pam.d/common-auth

Here some further indications that might help:
The feisty system is an upgrade from edgy. In edgy, there was kernel
2.6.17-11 that worked.
In feisty, there also is a 2.6.17-11 kernel. (I don't know whether it is
the same or if it has been replaced during the upgrade)
