Are you using Beryl 0.2.0 RC1 or RC2.
It's a known buy in RC1, ubuntu-xgl was not built correctly in RC1 but
works pefectly (for me) in RC2.

Forgot to add : I did start the installer in a terminal using the
--debug switch as you asked me, but for some reason, it doesn't print
ANY message in the terminal window whatsoever ! No-thing, nada ! :o( Not
very useful then :o(
