Procedural question: How do I get the core dump out of the .crash file?
I could write a program to do it, but I'm sure something else exists
already. I asked on IRC and googled around, but I couldn't find anything
out.

I fully agree that this needs to be dealt with promptly and properly,

The fact that you appeared to be able to change both was a bug - there's
only one voltage plane on the core 2 package, so it's not possible for
the two to be independently clocked in any useful way. Both cores would
in fact be clocked at the highest speed requested. 2.6.20 merely fixes

I got about 10 crash reports from .py files it was trying to load

It is kernel version 2.6.20-6.11.
I've did a apt-get install --reinstall of the kernel and this helped. I
can now boot the laptop... I'm still suspecting a bad block on the disk
or something.

I've tracked down this problem to upstart.
With xen-3.0.4, I have a lot of kernel messages like this :
"4gb seg fixup, process init (pid 1), cs:ip 73:08051546"
"4gb seg fixup, process logd (pid 2429), cs:ip 73:0804b0da"
The only processes generating such warnings are init and logd, both of
which
"apport-unpack file.crash directory". On feisty apport sent different
files to the bug so it's easier, you can open or download only what you
want. You can also use "apport-retrace" to download the debug packages
for everything used by the app and regenerate a backtrace then (or just
update the bac

I can confirm this also happens for me. Kubuntu Fiesty Herd 2 fully up

hm... looks like there are more bashisms in the Makefile, however none that
would imo break things.
Maybe setting the shell to /bin/bash might be a saner approach.
(you can do this with SHELL=/bin/bash at the beginning of the Makefile).

Regarding the wireless, my laptop has a wireless indicator light, that
is supposed to come on when the card is active. However, at the moment
it is only turning on at the same time as X is starting (i.e. after long
delay). Now you've mentioned this, I'm sure it used (in Edgy) to come on
earlier, so
