This issue seems to be that you are doing it on an encrypted filesystem.
The kernel obviously has to perform a lot of IO intermixed with
computational overhead to do this.
I don't know if the performance problem is expected or not. It all
depends on what encryption method you are using, etc.

The fact that programs work offline mode when network-manager isn't a
bug. The bug is that network-manager doesn't detect your static
configuration. So I mark this as a duplicate of bug #61089. Please, feel

I tried installing xine-lib from feisty, but get the exact same thing.
I'm going to try reinstalling with an actual edgy CD rather than
upgrading from my dapper CD just to make sure it's just not something
wrong with my installation.
