On my acer aspire 1692 (with mobility radeon x700) i have the same
freezing problem when i switch to console or logout/switchuser/etc. I
tried to modify gdm.conf and xorg.conf but no way.
So, like Henrik, if i start in recovery mode and lauch gdm from the
console i don't get the problems.

I can say you that now the CPU is no more 100%. Now the use of the CPU is very
low (0% - 2%).

log with gdm but to some other environment (wmaker, xfce, kde, ...) and
try to do the same thing. I didn't know that people were stil using
xcompmgr, what is that useful for? If you want to some composite manager

Thanks, that worked. Got another bug (terminal window not updating), but
that's another thing.
I guess in that case, that compiz bug should be fixed. We'll see when a
dev turns up here.
