I tried a Edgy Live instal tonight and it started properly (I didn't
complete the installation since I didn't want to reinstall my OS
tonight). So going from 256mb to 768mb of ram on this laptop solved the
problem in Edgy that I had with both the Live Installer and Firefox.

however aquiring a dhcp-lease fails. If you use dhclient afterwards
everything works fine.
I renamed the ra0 device to eth1 in /etc/iftab, but this has no effect
either.

I have a rt2500 based card myself, and it doesn't play too well with
NetworkManager yet.
Have you tried connecting to a network without encryption? You should also be
able to set the ssid without deactivating the ra0 interface.
So does the card itself work, or is this just a problem with NetworkM

I have a 9700 in my laptop, which is out of subbixel rendering.
Instad my friend has a 9000 (which has 64MB of ram and can run
smoothly neverwhinter nights 1 so it is surely compiz capable!)

and after a suspend to disk, the application that shows CPU frequency
shows 100% for Core 1. Running top I cannot find anything special

Maybe your steps to trigger it are not clear then, could you describe what you
do from a fresh account, something like:
* open the dialog
* click on manual proxy config
* enter an IP to one of the entry
* close the dialog
* start a command line
* echo $http_proxy

Correction... It doesn't hang, it just does 5-10 minute pauses. And the
pauses are repeated throughout the install process, every time hardware
is polled (detect network, find install media and so on).

boots up ok, click install but when i click next after step 4 the screen

Problem confirmed on Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft). The text widget in the
composer doesn't seem to support this kind of input.

I can confirm this on up to date edgy at least if i start OO under KDE
even with running gnome-settings-daemon.
In addition to this fonts in OO look very ugly, like dpi is detected wrong.
I use 96 dpi setting in xorg.conf, kde and gnome and mostly Arial.
It works nice everywere except in OO.
