Nope, neither kernel nor Evolution caused any problems since then. The

Correct diagnosis. The distribution upgrade (not aptitude dist-upgrade)
removed a bunch of python dependent packages (eg pybliographer) and then
installed a bunch of 2.5 new packages and hal-device-manager now works.

Ok more test done. Looks like bios controls the fan somehow when the
laptop boots on ubuntu. So what i'm doing right now is see if the fan
works when using the notebook. If I see cpu temperature is at 60º or
above, i tweak the pollinq_frequency file and make the fan start to
work.

KDevelop crash after the project is loaded.
KDevelop don't crash if the the file kpackagemaker.kdevses don't exists!
This is my Project session file:

It looks like the problem has been resolved in the latest batch of
fixes. The fan now runs constantly and keeps things cool. I note in the
system log that their is now an entry specifically for the Armada 1700
series and MSFT that turns the fan on and it stays on.

Uh, I'm so sorry, I meant that you have to start gdb with command:
gdb qgo 2>&1 | tee gdb-qgo.txt
then type:
run
and qgo should start.
and when the crash happens:
bt full
info registers
thread apply all backtrace
quit

/var/log/syslog is only telling me, that the user could notbe logged in.

Since the error message is "insufficient resources", it might be worth
checking how much memory is available on the system (both swap and
physical). It could also be due to inability to allocate video memory.
Could you attach the output of lshw?
Could you also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file
