I experienced the same problem on a new machine using ubuntu 6.10 DVD.
the noapic option got ubuntu DVD to run. I was able to install ubuntu on my
hard drive;
first reboot got me the same error again, I then removed the quiet option to
get the error msg reported below.

My Yuan PD300 mini usb stick tv card does not work in Ubuntu (Dapper,

Initially there were some problems in the code which have now been fixed

I've run into this same bug.
I was able to trace it to a null pointer exception when loading the
ath_pci module.
To reproduce:
1. moved madwifi drivers out of the way
2. boot
3. move madwifi drivers back
4. modprobe ath_pci
5. see kernel NULL pointer dereference in kmesg

This appears to be a problem with the webpage itself, and not a Firefox
or Xorg bug. There is no Flash on the page, so that rules out a
possibility of a bug in the Flash player.

This is fixed for me in Feisty... OO 2.1. But, I'm only using (full)
hinting... no "smoothing" / anti-aliasing in the Feisty version. Sure
looks like it's using the full byte code interpreter in libfreetype
properly again.
