When checking your kern.log, it can be seen that the amount of swap is 0!!
So it seems you don't have swap partition or file mounted.
You may check it with "swapon -s", if nothing is returned it means you
have to check why the swap is not mounted. You can check the last lines
of /var/log/messages

This happens with both totem-xine, xine-ui, and kaffeine for me on DVD
playback. It can be corrected by manually setting the digital AV sync
in xine-ui, but still thats not a fix.
Downgrading to an older xine-lib fixes the problems, and they dont just
sit in xine-ui.

Well I understand close to nothing about it :-)
But even if the solution is to leave the password blank, and the only
security threat is the one you mention, I still think it's a good idea
to add per-application priveleges as an enhancement - that's one less
security threat to worry about.

Well... I don't think it's an issue in Firefox anymore. I tried letting
the screen turn off a few times, but Firefox did fine with it. However,
one of the times the entire screen was messed up until I hit F5 and
reloaded Firefox.

using a swap partition according to `swapon -s'. I didn't know this
(because I have one set up at hda1). So I'm only using my 472mb ram (512
minus onboard mem). But this actually means that Ubuntu is using much
more memory than I t

It seems to crash in mpeg2_idct_init.
That would make this a mpeg2 bug, and most likely one that might depend on the
type of CPU optimizations that are enabled. You could test if --disable-sse
--disable-mmx on VLC might fix the crash.

I almost lost my root partition after a misdirected mkswap command, so I
think this bug is really important.
My / partition is about 15 GB, and swap partition is about 1 BG

older vlc plugins, remove .vlc which has the VLC cache, and look at if
the "binary" modules may be the problem.
If that doesn't help, it's probably a module one of VLCs modules is

HAL/DBUS changes are being worked on for future versions, which could detect
DVDs
That should make it easier i guess. Not before 0.9.0 I suspect.

Can you do a "ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and post the results? If the file
really is empty, you can regenerate it with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
But it seems strange that it got empty, especially since you attached the
contents earlier. Maybe you can try to get some more hands-on
Supplying vlc -vvv debug output with these kinds of errors usually helps
a lot as well.

I wound up manually configuring it in "about:config" while using FF
1.5.0.7 I am doing an install soon on another PC and can check FF
1.5.0.8 and see if it works or not w/o having to manually edit the
config file.

greatest ffmpeg is one way to have this problem not occur that often.
But new codecs are by definition always unstable. So there isn't that

The same happens when using xubuntu 6.10 ( with xfce 4.4R2 installed
from the installers at xfce.org ) . The only output line which appears
when launching banshee from the command line is :

The same bug still exists on Edgy. Installed Edgy server, dovecot
complainet about the missing /etc/inetd.conf. The message is not clear
at all; if it's only a warning, it should clearly say so. The way it is
it leaves the user unsure if dovecot will work or not.

One more note: I solved my problem installing netkit-inetd. Better safe
than sorry, because I have no way to know if dovecot will ever fail
because of the missing inetd.conf file.

I'm running edgy on an Acer Aspire 5102WLMi. All the alsa bits seem to
have been installed during setup, but gnome-sound-properties had
everything set to OSS. Switching to alsa resulted in no sound. To get
esd working, I had to replace libesd-alsa0 with libesd0 os that it would
work with oss.

Found the culprit in kdebase. This patch makes DPMS timeouts accurate

Since my upgrade to Edgy, I haven't been able to use any themes that I
download, such as the ones from gnome-look.org. All the themes that I
used to use in Dapper just look sort of Windows 98-ish and plain when I
load them. They don't work in the LiveCD either.
