What I've written previously is incorrect. In fact, I set
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor to performance,
the CPU boomed up to 2GHz and, after ~ one second, the clock sank down
to 800MHz again...
Not only that, I had a look in /proc/cpuinfo and I still get the CPU MHz
bug!

I believe the error here is that the install_device was invalid. Instead
of '(sdb3)', it should have been '(hd1)' or /dev/sdb.

To anyone else having this problem, the solution described by Jeffrey,
above, worked for me. I was having trouble starting esd back up. Not
having esd running meant I could only play sounds from one source at a
time (I had to close Rhythmbox if I wanted to hear anything else!).
Here's what I did

The "underlining" you speak of is when the ATI drivers fail to load 3d
hardware acceleration support. When you fixed your acceleration, by

I can confirm this bug.
Launching from desktop file shows:
"There was an error launching the application.

I believe the cause of your error is that grub was installing to an
invaild device. It tried to install to (sd0), which doesn't exist. The

Here is the source of the error. It is weird because it should be a
valid drive judging by the partitions listed in the partman log. Somehow
your drive or the way you partitioned your drive is messed up.

I've confirmed that rebuilding ffmpeg with --disable-altivec fixes the
problem for applications dynamically linked with the ffmpeg libraries.
Unfortunately, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg includes its own copy of ffmpeg
which it statically links, so programs using GStreamer still don't work.

When I press the OK button in the Open file (DVD) menu VLC crashes. I'm
on Edgy x64 with the latest version of VLC in Synaptic.

Josh, can you give more details on the precise error you are seeing, and
claiming to be fixed upstream? I see:

It also happens when closing the last message tab... so it happens with every
kind of tab, but it HAS to be the last one.
I always keep at least one tab open (the first one)! ;)

I think this was replaced by "Default Applications", which can also be
started by 'kcmshell defaultapplication'.

Mirco - unfortunately, the bug is in an obscure part of the cpufreq
code, and dmesg and lsmod don't show anything abnormal. The bug _does_
have a tendency to randomly appear and disappear. You might want to try
resetting the BIOS, perhaps that will help.
