A quick and easy work around for this bug (as advised by the developers
over in the Debian world) is to remove your ~/.sane/xsane directory.
Problem completely fixed for me once I had removed this and allowed
xsane to rewrite it. The old one was from a previous Gentoo

During beta-phase usbfs is disabled in Ubuntu, so people are reminded to
port their applications. For final release, usbfs will be reenabled
again.

Thanks for your report. This is also bug 48524, and occurs due to a
failure to handle module load errors on certain hardware. This is fixed
in 6.06.1, so you can work around it by upgrading all packages with
'ubiquity' in their names on the running live

I'm unsure at the moment what is needed, from the above descriptions
there are several different confusingly related problems going on.
Sadly it appears that the vast majority of people do not see this, so
it's working mostly right for them.

After a little research, it appears that gnome-screensaver is
responsible for locking, so I am moving this bug.
I can trigger the locking by running
gnome-screensaver-command --lock
Also, I notice that I can still interact with my desktop even though the
screen is black. It's as if gnome-screens
I don't know anymore. Usually, I have several NFS mounts, but normally I
unmount them before I ifdown an interface.

It works now. I guess it was just a problem with the server I was using
that didn't have the packages at the time I tried to install it.
