Like you I found that this worked in the previous Ubuntu but failed in

When I reported this as a bug, Chris Cheney replied that it was working in
8.10 so I guess that it is fixed in the latest upgra

Hiya. I reported this problem originally against the gnome-panel
workspace switcher applet; someone else thought it was compiz related;

The problem is still there. It is not specific to Open Office, it applies to
all apps.
I have just updated today, 17th October, and am currently running 8.04. I
assume the update to 8.10 will be available soon.

Correct.
Move the cursor over one of the desks with an open window and it says "click
to start dragging". This enables you to move an open window from one
workspace to another. This worked with any window ( that I tried ), not just
Open Office, in the previous Ubuntu but doesn't work with 8.04.
