I had the same problem over and over on Ubuntu and it hangs for serveral
applications even the HTML browner during opeining a URL. BUT .. I had a
solution in my case: I release the memory allocation using the following

Radeon 6620G. Has occurred on 12.04 through 13.04, both 32 and 64 bit
systems. Occurs regardless of whether I'm using FGLRX or the xorg-radeon
driver. Can't recall whether it was alleviated by running a 2D desktop.

Spoke too soon. Freezes seem to be less frequent but they do still

I had the freezing but mouse moving version of the system hang on Ubuntu
12.04 LTS until 8pm last night when I changed the LTS Enablement Stack
to Quantal as suggested in another launchpad forum. No more freezes
since then.

Had the same problem:
- Had to login again because I was inactive for quite a while
- Pop up on screen that I had to type in the password to connect to the network

I am having the same hanging problem. Mouse works but machien accepts no
mouse clicks or keyboard commands. If I reboot by pressing the power
button bios occassionally reports no keyboard and I have to wait a
minute before rebooting.
If it helps - I have power settings to go into standby after 10
No proper solution to date. We have upgraded our machines to 8Gb of RAM
and the problem does not manifest anymore since there is enough memory
for the application we use on a daily basis.

I have the same problem on only one of my machines. No encrypted disks.
No swapping.
I have had it happen several times while the machine was idling away. When I
returned, she was froozen. Only a hard reset would help.

have an encrypted home folder. Couple of times the freezes have resulted

It is a very notorios bug. It makes the system unusable. The only one way I
found to actually be able to work in Ubuntu is to remove Unity/Gnome/KDE a
guys. this has nothing to do with video drivers or at least not
specifically an nVidia or ATI one.
My system has nVidia, and it results in the exact same thing...

when you have installed the driver you should configure it for your specific

Yesterday Ubuntu froze on me too.
I was just doing some internetting, when the whole screen froze and i wasn't
able to do anything, the solution was to reset. Also the the laptop seemed not
to do anything (the hard drive led wasn't flicking).

Hi, this is not a display or xorg bug, see Bug #993187 (ubuntu 12.04
64bit completely freezes frequently). It seems to be a bug in the
current kernel and they suggest a fix by Installing Linux 3.3.6 kernel.

Okay, I switched to the recommended NVIDIA driver, the current version,
and so far (knock on wood), Ubuntu hasn't frozen once, and I've been on
this session for well over 3 hours. So, it is the "updated" version of
the NVIDIA driver that was to blame, or so it seems.

you are using NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 295.40 that is
broken, it is already fixed but under testing in these days. So you can use
unity-2D or unity-3D but disabling the proprietary driver. bug 982710

Nothing is happening under Unity 2D, though, during this current
session, I had a dialog come up that said that "Ubuntu 12.04 has
encountered a problem" Nothing else happened, but that does concern me.
That also happens under Unity 3D from time to time.

OK I tried MemTest and the option came up when I booted holding the ESC key but
when I select MemTest is give an error: Command 'Linux 16' not recognized.
I switched from Cinnamon DE to Classic Gnome. So far I have not had freezes
like before but I am getting a lot of error messages which direct

Also when I try to open /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old Ubuntu says there is no program
to open it. So I am not sure how to send it to you.
