OK I tried MemTest and the option came up when I booted holding the ESC key but when I select MemTest is give an error: Command 'Linux 16' not recognized. I switched from Cinnamon DE to Classic Gnome. So far I have not had freezes like before but I am getting a lot of error messages which direct me to report the error to Ubuntu which I did (I got about 4 error messages in quick succession)
