following in a terminal while booted into the default Ubuntu kernel (not a
mainline one) via:

I still have this exact same problem on 14.04 x64 (but it's been around
since 12.04). It happens on new installs of either Ubuntu release.
Thankfully, the workaround here still functions and saved me a lot of
trouble ("modprobe -r usbhid" followed by "modprobe usbhid"). The only
alternative is to
The fix for me was to reinstall these two packages:
xserver-xorg-input-mouse
xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse
(Using this command:)
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove xserver-xorg-input-mouse
xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse && sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-mouse
xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse

Robin Roth, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release

the same happens to the touchpad (fixable by modprobe -r psmouse,
modprobe psmouse)

workaround:
modprobe -r usbhid
modprobe usbhid
fixes the issue (until next suspend)
There's probably something wrong with pm-suspend resuming usbhid
