Yep,the "NoTotalSizeCheck " line is to solve the 'Six Screens' problem.
And 'temporarily' meaning this is just a 'Workaround' way,and I think it should
be no the ultimate solution.

You can add this two lines into /etc/X11/xorg.conf to let the graphics work
temporarily:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoTotalSizeCheck"
Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

I installed Ubuntu 11.10 with the open source drivers, and FN
brigthness works and screen is fine.
then i installed the nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version current)

The FN brightness function doesn't work, but the screen is fine.

This bug affects me too!
Lenovo Ideapad Y450 with a GT-240M video card.
I installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS and i got exactly the six screens as mentioned
above.
Also the FN brightness button doesn't dim the screen brightness!
After that i installed the additional drivers, but it remains the
Six Screens!
