A fix has been released in Linux Ubuntu Gutsy Backports that have many
chances to fix this bug. Can you install azureus version
2.5.0.4-1ubuntu3~gutsy1 and confirm that it fix this problem?

I had this problem too. Running Feisty with Java Version 1.6.0. I solved
it by downloading the latest 2.5.0.4 version of Azureus and replacing
the Azureus2.jar file in /usr/share/java . hope this helps...

hmm, there seems to be a few known issues of java and beryl playing
together nicely. this may be the cause.

I recently encountered this as well. Beryl crashed, causing azureus to
close unexpectedly. The solution that worked for me was to switch the
default version of Java back to gij-wrapper-4.1, allow azureus to
start/close normally, and then switch Java back to j2se.
I noticed j2se crashes before th
solution to this problem: download the latest vesion of Azureus from
their website
