Trond: have you made sure the i8k module is loaded ? Try "sudo lsmod |
grep i8k". If this returns nothing, then you don't have i8k loaded, so
try "sudo modprobe i8k".
This ought to let i8kmon work. If so you can add "i8k" to the file
/etc/modules to have it loaded automatically every time.

That "fix" didn't work with Gutsy on my Dell D420. I'm getting the error
message directory /proc/i8k does not exist.
If someone wants some kind of debug info, please let me know and also
tell me how.

Problem resolved.
Complete uninstall of i8kutils (use COMPLETE REMOVAL option in synaptic)
sudo apt-get clean
reboot
sudo apt-get install i8kutils
reboot
program works as per normal (expected)
