Trond: have you made sure the i8k module is loaded ? Try "sudo lsmod | grep i8k". If this returns nothing, then you don't have i8k loaded, so try "sudo modprobe i8k".
This ought to let i8kmon work. If so you can add "i8k" to the file /etc/modules to have it loaded automatically every time. I hope I'm not telling you things you already know.
