10.04 doesn't ship Xfce 4.8. If you've compiled it yourself, or
installed from a third-party repository, make sure you've upgraded panel
plugins as well, otherwise they won't work.

I am experiencing the same problem in Xubuntu Intrepid, but in my case,
it did not show up until after the upgrade to 4.4.3 an evening or so

I also encounter this bug, having just upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10. It
worked before, but now I can't add the volume control to the panel any
more. After clicking furiously for a while, it was added to the panel
once, but gone again after the next reboot.

I ran into this after installing Xubuntu 8.04.1, installing all updates,
then upgrading to xubuntu 8.10 using update-manager -d -c . There was no
volume control on the panel in Hardy 8.04, although it could be added
and removed. In Intrepid, it can not be added.

I found out that I can't add a volume plugin to the panel in Hardy
unless I first remove the keybindings for the media keys in the keyboard
settings. Removing them fixes it (the plugin handles them, so there is
no loss of functionality).

In my case the offending panel items work fine unless I use a
horizontally orientated panel (top or bottom of screen) with one of the
following three themes.
Human
Outdoors
Silicone
These three themes are the only ones that use the ubuntulooks engine which
appears to come from package gtk2-engine
I can confirm this bug.
The drag-n-drop workaround works depending on your theme. That means, if you
have "MurrinaStormCloud" as your current theme it works, but if you use "Human"
instead it doesn't. So you need to set your theme to "MurrinaStormCloud" and
drag the mixer-plugin to the panel in
I'm closing the tasks other than xfce4-mixer becauses they seem to be
irrelevant.

Confirming this as well. Am on Xubuntu Gutsy Upgrade with compiz-fusion.
Every Xubuntu Distro I have used before since Dapper have had this
problem at some point. I was hoping this recurring problem would be
solved already in Gutsy but its still here. :P

(Applications -> settings -> user interface -> theme tab.) For example,

I have this bug too, on a Xubuntu 7.04. I don't have xbindkeys
installed, so this is not the real cause of the problem, at least for
me.
Dragging the mixer applet to the panel works, but I have to do it every
time I start an X session, which is kind of bothering.

After some more checking, it turns out it's not xscreensaver. I had
simply assumed it because it had loaded after closing it. The problem,
strangely enough, lies in xbindkeys.
