I am currently running the RELEASED & up-to-date patched version of
Feisty and YES, these icon are still very dim as compared to the way
they have been displayed on previous versions of Ubuntu.
This might be considered a moot point since I will probably be changing
this machine to Gutsy shortly, b

I may have mis-stated. It is not actually the DESKTOP panel that I am
referring to but what I think you'all refer to as Ubuntu
artwork/panel/logo that is displayed just before getting up to the

Can you please provide some kind of screenshot or photo about this
problem. It is not very clear how you can see hardware related icons in
Ubuntu panel before login screen during boot process.
