I am currently running the RELEASED & up-to-date patched version of Feisty and YES, these icon are still very dim as compared to the way they have been displayed on previous versions of Ubuntu.
This might be considered a moot point since I will probably be changing this machine to Gutsy shortly, but if you are still interested in researching what was causing this under Feisty, please let me know what you might need in order to diagnose.
